Why would anyone want to leave a successful career as a senior manager for a major national gaming retail company to become a tutor? And assist the faculty manager carry the responsibility of a faculty that has over 10,400 students.
Well, that's really what Michael Tucker did. He began working with Home Learning College in 2006 and it could be said that his desire to become a tutor stemmed from his previous role, helping colleagues achieve their goals. A self-proclaimed people person, he found this new job as a tutor went one step better allowing him to spend his entire working day helping others.
The job of Home Learning College tutor is varied and involves everything from discussing individual tasks with students to reading and giving feedback on their assignments. MIchael enjoys every aspect of his role, and his interest in the success of his students reflects his belief that lifelong learning plays an ever-increasing role within society.
Michael says: "The best thing about my job is when I receive a call from a student who has really struggled throughout the course, but has recently completed it and is just calling to say thank you for all the help and support. That makes my job so fulfilling."
Michael would recommend this career to anyone. He believes a good tutor must have first class knowledge of the course material, good IT skills and, most importantly, be empathic, to individual needs. It is also essential to be empathetic, patient, have a flexible approach and be an excellent listener.
For anyone who is about to start a Home Learning College course, Michael's advice would be: "Take your time, read the questions set, research the questions before answering them, and never guess! Phone your tutor if you need help. Most importantly, enjoy yourself!"
Michael loves hearing the heart-warming stories of ex-students. He recounts: "I found out that an ex-student of mine used the information gained during the Diploma of Criminology to set up and run a successful Neighbourhood Watch Scheme that has resulted in a dramatic reduction in crime rates in her area."
